Many people in Bakuriani, Georgia were very excited to watch the 21 year old Luger, Nodar Kumaritashvili compete in the 2010 Olympics but instead now gather to attend his funeral. Nodar was going through his usual practice run around the track when he raced around a very sharp turn at 90 m/hr and flew off the race track and hit a metal pole. It was just a few hours before the opening ceremony. Thousand of grievers gathered in the yard of Nodar's house so they could participate in his funeral. A choir sang in the background and candles burned bright for the loss of their beloved. Nodar's father, David Kumaritashvili, mourned to his son photograph saying, “I wanted to throw a wedding feast for you. Instead, we have a funeral.”
Most of his friend said that, " despite his age, he was an experienced athlete who came from a dynasty of lugers." Two of Nodar's uncles and his father had won numerous medals in the same sport. Investigators of his death said that Nodar's casualty was attributable to inexperience, but his friends and family members convey that he was very knowledgeable in the sport and blamed his catastrophe on the course design. Even before, many people had raised concerns about the track for months. They "worried that the $100 million-plus venue was too technically demanding, and that only Canada’s sliders would have enough time to adapt to it during practice." It was stated that the Canadians had gone around the track hundreds of time while Nodar only had the time to complete 26 loops.
I think that they should not have put all the blame on the tracks course design. Nodar should have known what he was getting into and besides, he had already done 26 times. On the other hand I do think that is is unfair that the Canadians had gotten to practice on that specific track for a really long time and Nodar had not. They should have let both teams start at the same time.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the Olympics played out. I have heard that a lot of the other runs in other races were too fast and icy or they were too powdery. I have also heard that they had to ship in snow because the place where they held the Olympics is not high enough to make snow. You would think that they would chose a colder location.

Who do you think is more to blame: The track, or the luger.
Why?
Do you think it is a big deal or do you think it could happen to any one and we should move on?
